A free 2005 Ikea catalog that’s valid until June 30, 2006 was sent to us because they recently opened a store in Stoughton, MA which is only 55 minutes away from where we live. IKEA has stores in Europe, USA, Canada, Middle East and the Asian Pacific. Their catalog is a wopping 362 pages for those who enjoy looking in catalogs. I was impressed by the furniture’s simplicity, style and functionality which eventually led me to visit an IKEA Store to refinish my entire home.

IKEA definitely has a system in place for visiting, shopping and checking out. When you walk in you can pick up a shopping list, pen and a measuring tape. The buildings are massive so there is ample room to explore. Items are setup just as they would be in a home so you can get a good idea if they are exactly what you are looking for.

There are store clerks throughout the complex, you bring your item numbers to them and they enter the data. The next step is pretty straight forward, get a cart that fits your items and go to the stock area to get them, wheel your items to the front checkout area and pay for them, you are then on your way. If you prefer to make it a day long trip they even have a cafeteria.

What I like about Ikea

Low cost – IKEA is making an effort to offer you more, they can do this because it is “self serve” and most items require assembly which brings down their costs.

No pressure – They do not have sales people hounding you while you explore the store; you are free to lie on beds and let your children try out all the furniture.

Useful Furniture – The furniture is well thought out, a European style that allows you to make small areas efficient when it comes to space. For those with small homes or rooms that require less bulky furnishings this is a perfect match.

What do you need to be aware of before you purchase furniture?

Most of the furniture does not come assembled, *hint* I notice a few people offering to pickup and assemble items on craigslist.

Because the furniture is composite you have to be careful when assembling it, you can strip screws and break fittings but once it is together it is solid.

Flat non-assembled items do not ship well so if you can pickup them up to avoid dings I highly suggest this.
